Marimo is a rare growth form of Aegagropila that grow into large green balls with a velvety soft appearance. Marimo Balls can be found in a number of lakes and rivers in Japan and Northern Europe.
They live over 200+ years producing their own food and very grow large. They bring good luck and are known to be passed down as family airlumes.

Basic Care
Marimo balls require very little maintenance. They can be kept in tap water, filtered water, or even rain water. The lakes in which Marimo are naturally found are cold in temperature, so they do best in cool water (no higher than 76° F). Brown spots may form on your moss ball if their water is too warm. If so, you can place it in a water-filled container in your refrigerator for up to 24 hours at a time. Marimo balls can be kept in glass bowls, bottles, vases, and a variety of other containers(including aquariums). They do not need air, so they are able to survive in sealed containers.
Lighting
Marimo do not require special or high intensity lighting. Normal household lighting or indirect sunlight will suffice. Lighting that is too intense (direct sunlight or high-intensity LED) may cause brown spots to appear. If your ball is stationary for long periods of time, you may need to flip or rotate it to ensure that all sides receive enough light.
Water
Water changes are important for preventing dirt and waste from building up on your Marimo. If you are keeping it with no other plants or animals, we recommend a 50% water change every two weeks or so. If you are keeping it with animals and other plants, water change will likely need to be done more frequently.
Cleaning
Cleaning can be accomplished by taking your moss ball out of the water and rinsing it, followed by placing it in a container of clean water and gently squeezing the ball a few times. While you do this, carefully roll the ball in your hands for a few moments. Rolling the ball gently will help it regain its round shape.
